WALKING AROUND KARATSU

Would you like to walk around the castle town using an Edo-period map? This experience is possible only in the town of Karatsu, where several streets from the Edo period remain, and one can stroll around the area relying on the stone walls and buildings that have stood since the Edo period. You can enjoy getting lost, but also discover new things.

The Ishigaki Walkway is a 2-kilometer-long walkway with a series of stone walls that were built extending westward from Karatsu Castle during the feudal domain era. Visitors stroll from inside the eastern castle through the Ninomon Moat. While walking along stone walls, visitors can enjoy the historic streetscape of Karatsu and its beautiful scenery. Moreover, it is a walking path where one can enjoy the shadows and moss created by the stone walls—both from above and from afar.

This walking path, full of history, begins at Karatsu Station and Karatsu Castle. On this path, numerous buildings, inns, and other historical sites in Karatsu City can be visited. Along with the aforementioned buildings, there are buildings that have remained from the Edo period and from the Taisho period, allowing visitors to stroll around and experience the atmosphere of various bygone eras.

The riverside walkway is a beautiful walking path that begins at Jouchi Bridge. With Karatsu Castle in the background, cross the Jouchi Bridge, turn left, and find a beautiful walking path leading to the Matsuura Bridge. On this path, you can enjoy the sea, a beautiful river, and Karatsu Castle. A well-maintained and beautiful path is crowded with people enjoying running and strolling. The view of Karatsu Castle across the river is also breathtaking. At night, Karatsu Castle is lit up and looks even more beautiful, a sight that must not be missed.
